In this day and age, people love to rank things. From movies and songs to presidents and sports teams, we love to know where everything stands and who’s number one. We’re so obsessed that the day after a college football champion is crowned the experts begin talking about who will win it all the next year. So, what’s next? How about the top color of the year.
PANTONE®, a worldwide expert on color that provides industries with a color matching system (PMS) toidentify and manage colors during the design process, recently unveiled their Color of the Year for 2011…Although Cerulean may demand a recount. Think that isn’t a big deal? Over the years Pantone’s declarations have had a huge influence on that year’s fashion and design. Maybe you didn’t notice, but a lot of the clothes in your closet could have been inspired by previous Colors of the Year.

So, who is the top hero of the hues? Congratulations Honeysuckle, Pantone has chosen you as the 2011 color of the year! Honeysuckle is a vibrant, rosy pink, which according to pantone.com is “encouraging and uplifting.” It “elevates our psyche beyond escape, instilling the confidence, courage and spirit to meet the exhaustive challenges that have become part of everyday life.” This may sounds like a load of garbage to some people, but believe me, it’s not…Well, maybe the part about it elevating your psyche.
Some people may not realize just how important color is. Color is big, like fashion show big—so big that you don’t even know it’s even affecting you. Color influences fashion and design, along with marketing, advertising, new car models, you name it. Take for example last year’s Color:Turqoise. It was everywhere from prom dresses, to bed sheets and home furnishings. It may even have made its way into your home. As for Honeysuckle? It’s already taking off, withjewelry, fashion and even the option of getting it on your credit card.
You are now under Honeysuckle’s reign. Whether it makes you green with envy, red with anger or golden with happiness, Honeysuckle will hold the crown until 2012.
What do you think about the color of the year? Will it catch on like turquoise, or just quietly go back into the coloring box?
