Add a Call To Action To Everything You Do

LikeMePlease In today’s world, we’re all worried about perception.

Likability is what everyone wants and it’s at the forefront of our day-to-day interactions, even for businesses. Facebook’s use of the “Like us” feature has now been so ingrained in our thinking that we not only have to get others to say they like us but there also has to be tangible proof. The thinking goes that if you don’t get “likes” there must be something wrong with you, even if in reality there is no truth to that thought whatsoever.

As an ad agency, we’ve always known that perception is everything—especially in today’s world where social media can influence people more than any press conference, marketing campaign or spokesperson ever could. Take for example if someone makes a false claim about a restaurant, saying they serve old, expired food that once was in their dumpster as was the “Dumpster Food” case with Golden Corral. Whether it was true or not, people believed it. That puts businesses and people in difficult situations of working damage control. It’s even worse when the perception is untrue yet many people take it at face value without fact checking.

Of course, “Like Us” is what we in the ad industry refer to as a Call To Action that suggests to the viewer a behavior you’d like them to exhibit. It’s been the crux of our industry since the first caveman tried bartering meat with another guy and suggested he “try a sample piece before the offer expires.” If someone really likes you they will often find you on their own. However, with the massive amount of content people are exposed to every day it can seem overwhelming and you may get lost in the shuffle. That’s why reinforcing that message is important by providing a gentle reminder.

Why aren’t customers interacting with your business as much as you’d like?

It might seem like a simple concept, but people are more likely to do something if you specifically ask them. Sometimes all it takes is a simple suggestion. Include ‘Like us on Facebook’ on your website, add ‘please retweet’ to the end of your tweets, and wrap up blog posts with ‘Please comment below.’ No matter if you’re talking about business or your personal life, the greatest lesson you can take away is to add a Call To Action to everything you do.
